COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A Columbus County neighborhood is shocked and a family is grieving tonight after losing not one, but two relatives. Now investigators and family members are looking for justice.
"All I know is that my sons are gone," Charles Williams said. "Two of them passed out here for fools. That don't make no sense."
Those are the words of a grieving father who lost two sons in what the family and investigators suspect was an attempted robbery. The incident happened in the Tabor City area on Ridgeland Acres Drive.
The Columbus County Sheriff's Office says just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday they received multiple calls of shots fired. When they arrived they found 39-year-old Jerome Williams laying outside the home. His brother, 42-year-old Lee Otis Vereen, was also shot at the home, but was taken to the hospital by a family member. Both brothers died.
The family is hoping the shooter will soon be caught. Charles Williams and his wife said their sons were family men, pointing out just how cheerful their personalities were.
"It's always sad when somebody is killed or there is a homicide, but then you look at it during the Christmas season, that makes it even worse," Maj. Lewis Hatcher of the Columbus County Sheriff's Office said. "It's a sad time for it to occur."
Investigators are not saying much about their investigation, except that they believe the double murder is the result of an attempted robbery. As for relatives, they say it will be hard, but they know they must move on. They just hope the shooter will be caught before Christmas, giving the family some closure for the holidays.
Investigators urge anyone with information about the murders to contact the Columbus County Sheriff's Office at (910) 642-6551.
