Some of you have a 4:3 CRT TV with 16:9 mode that squashes the picture. This tutorial is about on how to improve the PS3 resolution on a CRT TV with 16:9 mode without squashing. The picture is sharper in 16:9 mode because the interlaced lines are closer to each other.

Xbox 360, Wii, Wii U & Stand alone DVD player also have this 16:9 settings. See instruction manual for details.

This setup works with Composite AV, S-Video & Component cable. If Component is in HD mode (720p, 1080i, 1080p) the aspect ratio is automatically 16:9 and cannot be change to 4:3. Also applies with HDMI. Most CRT TV don't support HD mode except high end models.
