Lawnscience is a lawn franchise, we operate in the UK and currently have fifteen franchisees who provide lawn care services throughout the UK. The lawn franchise market is a growing market within the UK and has been operating now for about thirty years. A lawn franchise business will normally offer a range of treatments to its customers. These normally start with an annual program of between three to five fertilisation and weed control treatments per year. These standard treatments normally start in the month of march and continue throughout the year on a bi-monthly basis. The fertiliser used in these treatments will vary throughout the year, because the needs of the grass changes with the seasons. A competent lawn franchise will understand the differing needs of grass throughout the year and will have devised a treatment plan consisting a various fertilisers. The weed control products applied with the fertilisers are called herbicides, they target weeds within the grass and have no effect on the grass itself. There are a wide range of lawn franchise herbicides available to a lawn franchise, the herbicide selected will be determined by the variety of weeds in the lawn. some herbicides have affect on a variety of weeds, again the skill of the lawn franchise will be important in ensuring the that correct herbicide is selected. When a herbicide is applied the chemical soaks into the plant via the stomata or pores of the leaf. It is important that the chemical remains on the leaf tissue for at least one hour after the lawn franchise has applied the treatment so it has time to soak in. If rain should arrive within the hour after treatment there is a risk that the chemical will be washed off the leaf before the chemical has had time to soak in and therefore the weed treatment will be ineffective. A quality lawn franchise will guarantee its treatments so if rain does come within the first hour after treatments with a herbicide this should cause no issue for the customer as the lawn franchise will return to reapply the herbicide on the next dry day. When these standard lawn franchise treatments are being applied a quality lawn franchise will review the condition of the lawn and provide written feedback to the home owner as to the condition of the lawn. In some cases damaging issues can be avoided by quality feedback to the client. Take the issue of Red Thread, a common lawn fungal disease. All good lawn franchise operators will be trained to spot red thread so they can inform the customer that they have this fungal infection on their lawn. This then allows the customer to make the decision whether or not to have the recommended treatment, which in the case of red thread is a fungicide application. Throughout the year if the regular feedback of a good lawn franchise is followed the customers lawn will be kept in good condition and free from disease. There are other times when a quality lawn franchise will prove their worth. This is in the case of preventative treatments, these are treatments which when applied at the correct time of year will prevent certain issues from becoming a problem. Take the case of worms in a lawn. A competent lawn franchise will ensure that its customer are given timely advice on the benefits and problems associated with worms in a lawn. All good lawn franchise operators know that worms in the soil are good. They constantly move through the soil eating soil and improving its condition. This constant movement through the soil also created little channels which is good and allow air to penetrate into the soil. But a good lawn franchise team member will also be aware that the worms tend to surface in the winter months and when they do they leave casts or mounds of earth on the lawns surface. The lawn franchise operator should inform the lawn franchise customer that these casts can cause problems as when it rains and they get squashed down the tend to cover up a large area of grass. due to the grass underneath the cast not being able to get sunlight it dies and then leaves a perfect spot for weeds and moss to develop. so providing the lawn franchise customer with information on worms will let them make an informed decision as to whether to have a worm treatment applied in the late autumn to stop the worms casting n the surface. Another area in which the lawn franchise operator will be able to give advice is in the area of insect control. All good lawn franchise business will ensure that their franchisees are well trained on how to prevent and treat unwanted lawn pests. The main two are leatherjackets and chafer grubs. These insects can cause havoc in a lawn, basically they eat through the roots of the grass which in turns causes the grass to die. The first sign of these kind of infections is large areas of the lawn dyeing off. A competent lawn franchise professional will immediately understand the issue.
