So Flametongue Kavu made the Top 8 list of best ever creatures and doesn't make the Top 8 list for best red cards?  Ahh the subjectivity changes with every day of the week it seems.

Yeah I think Red is classically underrated by Spikes because if you think about it, Red has a very underwhelming presence on eternal formats compared to colors like Blue. But I will always be a Red mage first and foremost of versatility. Most discards and counterspells all feel the same, with only a handful that feel like they're not obsolted by the best 5 or so. Burn spells stray from this problem. There's tons of burn spells that do different things, even depending on the deck you play. Sure, you could load your deck down with Lava Spike clones and call it a day, but I just love beign able to pick a burn package with some combination of Lightning Bolt, Staggershock, Burst Lightning, Forked Bolt, etc. There's not too many ways you can change how counterspells interact besides limiting what they can hit and their mana cost. But still today there remains a lot of untapped potential in burn spell variants; take a look at Puncture Blast, Magma Jet, Thunderblade Charge for flavorful spins on a seemingly simple mechanic.
