British officials have confirmed strained ties with their Chinese counterparts.

Chinese authorities have halted meetings between the two nations since May, including cancelling a visit by a high-level Chinese official.

Cancellations first began after Prime Minister David Cameron met with the Dalai Lama in May.

The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader was in the UK to receive the Templeton Prize.And he will return to the UK tomorrow for a range of speaking events, including a convention in Leeds.

The city of Leeds will host the training camp for the 2012 London Olympics. It is reported that Chinese officials have also pressured the local city council to cancel the Dalai Lama's visit.

The BBC says Chinese authorities have threatened to pull Olympic athletes from the Leeds training camp.Despite this, the Dalai Lama's visit to the city is still planned to go ahead.
