In this video, Mahalo computer expert Sean Hewitt explains what you need to know about spyware.

What is Spyware?

Spyware sits on your computer, collects your personal information such as bank account details or social security number, and sends it to another user.

How Does It Work?

Spyware is usually disguised in online downloads from fraudulent or hacked websites. In general, if you download something that is "too good to be true," such as a free movie, chances are it contains spyware. When you click, open, download and install the spyware file, it passes through your lines of defense and sits on the computer. It collects your personal information and sends it back to the creator who then uses or sells the data.

How Do I Protect Myself?

Most robust antivirus programs have a spyware removal feature. If you find yourself on a suspicious website or are unsure of a download, google the name and look for information or warnings from other users. You can also enter the name on www.PhishTank.com to see if the site has been flagged as fraudulent.
