On World Food Day (October 16) 2009, the Manitoba Alternative Food Research Alliance (MAFRA) hosted an event in the inner city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. It featured live music and a fair trade lunch for 350 attendees that featured Sudanese, vegan and traditional Aboriginal foods and which welcomed many of the residents in this low income neighbourhood. Skill based workshops including tapping maple trees, vegetable storage, food fermentation, and eating native plants as well as discussion groups on the importance of food justice were also conducted. Attendees Michelle Schram and Ashley Rach speak to the importance of the MAFRA event and World Food Day.
