Throughout its December 2011 graduation ceremonies the University of Cape Town presented various awards and medals to acknowledge the contributions made by certain members of its community. Diana Oliver received UCT's first Chancellor's Medal for making a contribution to the common good. Professor Richard van der Ross was awarded the President of Convocation medal which is presented annually to a past student who has made a remarkable contribution to society. UCT's Social Responsiveness Award recognised the projects that contribute to sustainable food security and the advancement of the constitutional rights of rural women - the Southern African Food Lab (SAFL) and the Rural Women's Action Research Project (RWAR).
