The 15th Annual Vigil for Victims of Hate & Violence is held yearly in Montgomery, AL in memory of Billy Jack Gaither, a 39 year old gay man, who was murdered February 19, 1999. Billy Jack worked at the Russell Athletics apparel company near Sylacauga, Al and was brutally beaten to death. His throat was cut, and his body was bludgeoned with an ax handle before being thrown on top of a pile of tires and set on fire. This vigil is observed in order to bring attention to these awful crimes and in the hope that such things may be stopped. Key note speaker - Dr Paul Hard; Music - "The Shouting Stones" and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Choir of Montgomery; Sponsors - Alabama NOW; Equality Alabama, Immanuel Presbyterian Church, New Hope Metropolitan Community Church, PFLAG, Alabama Safe Schools Coalition, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Montgomery; the Southern Poverty Law Center, and Mosaic Inc.
