Based on a true story, but in the equivalent of the day of "never let the facts get in the way of a good story", the somewhat sanitised version of probably an innocent man being hanged for something he probably didn't do, gave birth to this most famous of folk ballads. Google the story of Tom Dula, the name changed in the song to Dooley, and Laura Foster, and her sisters and cousins, and a retired colonel referred to as "Grayson" in the song, The true story of Tom Dooley is interesting, and sad.
