CADILLAC'S FIRST VENTURE INTO THE ULTRA-LUXURY ROADSTER MARKET PRODUCED THE ALLANTE". THE ALLANTE' WAS PLANNED TO RESTORE CADILLAC AS A PREMIUM LUXURY CAR BUILDER. THIS CAR WAS DESIGNED TO COMPETE WITH THE MERCEDES BENZ SL AND THE JAGUAR XJS. A 4.1 LITRE V8 ENGINE WAS USED SHARING THE SAME POWERPLANT WITH OTHER CADILLAC MODELS BUT THATS WHERE THE SIMILIARITIES STOPPED. THE BODY OF THE ALLANTE" WAS DESIGNED AND BUILT IN ITALY BY PININFARINA OF FARRARI FAME. THE COMPLETED BODIES WERE SHIPPED 3,300 MILES FROM ITALY IN A SPECIAL BOEING 747, 56 AT A TIME TO CADILLAC'S DETROIT HAMTRAMACK ASSEMBLY PLANT. THE BODIES WERE THEN MATED TO THE CHASSIS. THE FRONT WHEEL DRIVE ON ALLANTE'S CAUSED UNDERSTEER IN FAST CORNERING AND POOR FRONT-REAR WEIGHT BALANCE. THIS CAUSED PERFORMANCE TO BE SEDATE AND WITH THE $54,700 PRICE TAG VIRTUALLY STUNTED SALES. ALLANTE'S WERE SOLD FROM 1987 - 1993, WITH ABOUT 21,000 UNITS BUILT OVER IT'S SEVEN YEAR RUN. THE 1987 ALLANTE" WITH A REMOVABLE ALUMINUM HARDTOP AND THE INDUSTRY'S FIRST POWER RETRACTABLE AM/FM CELLULAR PHONE ANTENNA. A MULTI-PORT FUEL INJECTED VERSION OF CADILLAC'S ALUMINUM 4.1 LITER HT-4100 V8, ROLLER VALVE LIFTERS, HIGH FLOWCYLINDER HEADS AND A TUNED INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS INCLUDED THIS YEAR. FOUR WHEEL DISC BRAKES WERE ALSO STANDARD. THANKS VERY MUCH FOR VIEWING THIS RARE CADILLAC ALLANTE.
