What is a mola and where they come from?
Handmade Molas the Art of the Kuna Indians of San Blas Islands, Panama.
The word mola refers to the traditional Kuna Blouse and to the beautiful, colord fabric panels sewn on its front and back.
A traditional mola is assembled using the technique of "Reverse Applique or Applique" on several layers of colored cotton fabric. The first foundation layer remains whole and uncut. The reverse applique method requires the use of several layers of fabric that will be cut in intricate patterns and the cut out of the top layers revealing the more colourful layers underneath. The layers are then intricately stitched together, the stitching is invisible and fine, normally using a fine needle and thread, they fold the edge under and start stitching, keeping the stitches even in size and evenly spaced, on the sharp points turning under the excess of fabric into a small space and then cut away the excess of fabric, once you start sewing a mola the first knot must be hidden and to finish the end neatly, the kunas make a loop at the last stitch and bring the needle through.
This is a lenghty process and requires a lot of patience and time consuming, according to the complexity of the theme.
I have an incredible passion for handmade art, I love to create different sewing projects, quilts and decorate my home with molas
