These videos are from the first tape of my Sony CCD FX-510 I have. This was the first video camera I owned and learned to grow to love railroad videography.

The shots from this are quite bad, but I knew what I wanted to get, just needed a little refining in technique and equipment. Some videos were shot with a very cheap tripod; I QUICKLY LEARNED that I needed a more sturdy one to make the shots a little more professional.

The video begins with a northbound Amtrak Coast Starlight at MP 757.7 at Betts Crossing, just north of Oregon City. Just a few minutes later a southbound Coast Starlight at the same crossing, however this trains second locomotive is Amtrak 231, the same locomotive that Chris Fussell saved from the torch and now resides in the collection of the Northwest Rail Museum. (see Chris' page On YouTube, F40PHR231). The roll by also includes my old '79 Buick and the SP 757.5 detector.

53 miles east of Portland is the UP detector where we find a east and westbound freight. Today the detector reports MP 52.9, however the detector itself never really moved.

Next and finally we have the SP4449 northbound at Betts Crossing and at Portland Union Station. The 4449 was returning from California from the NRHS convention. In the first part, if you listen carefully, you can hear the hotbox detector say "stop your train" as it detected the heat from the engine and caused a false reading.

The second part is the 4449 arriving at Union Station. While I am not too sure, Portland seems to have its collection of 'brain trusts' who just HAVE to ruin everyone's shot and place themselves in danger while it is obvious that there is a train in the immediate area. "Good job lady for your stupidity!"
