Dr. Dan Gottschling of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center explains the science behind why age is the greatest carcinogen. Using yeast as the model organism, Dr. Gottschling discovered that with age these yeast cells begin to have disfunctional mitochondria, which means that a number of processes stop to function, leading to genome instability, which is one of the hallmarks of cancer. These results were published in the June 26, 2009 issue of Cell magazine.
