I found the best deal on pasta, rice, bread mixes and pasta. I just couldn't pass it up. I have to stock up. I've watched my pasta go from 3/$1 to over a $1 a package in 3 years. Now, that's some serious inflation. The muffin mixes that we love to make have doubled, and pasta mixes have done the same. So when I can catch a deal on bread mixes or pasta for less than $.80 each, I stock up. I'm not able to really store up because of limited resources, but I do the best I can with what I have.

I've had questions about the cost of doing something like. This is where I should probably mention that we don't eat out very often, we don't have expensive smart phones and data plans. We don't endulge ourselves in those luxuries. Not that they are bad. I just like to know that I'm providing my family with a luxury of a different kind. You can do a little each week, too.

When you find a good deal and you stock up (that's literally what my store calls it, a "stock-up sale"-so I do!), then you have the problem of where to put it all. This is where buckets and proper food storage come in handy. I can extend the life of my dried food items by 2 years by packing them this way. So, if I don't go into these buckets for at least 3 years (doubtful since we eat all of these items on a weekly basis) this food will stay nice and fresh.

The Gamma lids that I'm referring to are now sold at the big box home improvement store that has a orange logo and their own 5 gallon orange buckets. I don't want to say their name, but I'm sure you know which store I'm talking about. Although the price of buckets and lids has gone up 25% since last year, they are still convenient and always in stock. The gamma lids are a good price there, too. I've bought them by the case before and their price is very reasonable.

For all this food that I packed up in these bucket, I only spent a little over $50. Maybe not even that much. So, to quantify this for you, that's dinner and a movie. Which we don't do anymore now that our priorities have changed.

God bless you as you do the best you can with the resources He has blessed and trusts you with. There is no better way to preserve your dinner table than to catch those good deals and stock up, or to plant a garden and watch your family enjoy the blessing of having a beautiful and delicious harvest. You honor God and your ancestors, who also practice food storage and preservation.
