During the late 1990s, the Oakland International Trade Center - located behind a Home Base retail store in Oakland, California - was transformed into the International [R]a[v]e Center until the City Council decided to discontinue rave permits and shut down all the warehouses that were being used to host these parties. A few years after the ban of raves, Home Base went out of business and then in 2005, the entire building mysteriously caught on fire and crumbled. This is footage from the night that Home Base collapsed in flames, and from Quest 11/13/99 - the second-to-last rave ever held there. The shots aren't great, I admit, but they capture the heart of the Bay Area rave scene during fall 1999 - the end of a beautiful era in the history of West Coast electronic dance culture. It was certainly the most influential and rewarding year of my youth!
