Toronto's Sarah Slean is "one of the most compelling acts Canada has to offer" (TIME). A superstar in the pop world, she also has a serious background in classical music.

This was Sarah's debut performance with Symphony Nova Scotia and it features the premier of a three movement song cycle commissioned by CBC and created by one of Canada's most innovative and original composers, Christos Hatzis.

Lamento tells a classic story, a broken heart giving voice to her sadness before she takes her own life. Christos Hatzis was inspired by rock classics like Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin and Hotel California by the Eagles. Those songs use what is called a Lamento bass, a repeated descending bass line that backs up a soaring melody. You'll hear how Christos uses an even older version of the Lamento bass "When I am Laid in Earth" from Henry Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas to underscore his own writing.

First, you will hear Christos Hatzis' imaginative, dense and exhilarating arrangement of one of Sarah's tunes "Parasol", where Sarah sings circles around the concertmaster of Symphony Nova Scotia - Robert Uchida.

It's a true meeting of minds between an incredibly talented pop diva and a very broad thinking classical composer.
