Governor Chris Christie talks about Education Reform Agenda and being in Step with the Obama Administration on Student Performance and Teacher Evaluation during a press conference in West Trenton, N.J. on Tuesday, June 1, 2010. (Governor's Office / Tim Larsen)

'These were core principles that I've been campaigning on since I decided to seek this job and candidly these are principles that I'm in lockstep with President Obama on. I mean, this is a unique moment in American history. We have a Republican Governor of New Jersey and a Democratic President of the United States who agree that merit pay should go to individual teachers, that agree that student achievement has to be a key part if not the key part of judging teacher effectiveness, and so if Commissioner Schundler disagreed with some portions of that, that's his right to do. I want him to bring to me his areas of disagreement but ultimately there's no doubt in his mind nor should there be in anybody else's who's in charge. I make these decisions, and I made it, and that's the way it goes."
