This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Paul hopes to break the barriers of time, money and fear (which he believes prevents us from learning) by introducing a simple method to link music with learning for primary schools across the UK and beyond.

Paul Smith is the founder of VCM, a charity that works with over 20,000 young people every year. He sings with VOCES8 and is the CEO of the charity. He is a passionate educationalist and musician. His first book on music education, the VOCES8 Method, is published by Edition Peters. In 2013, VCM launched the Gresham Centre in London, a new centre for vocal music and outreach in the heart of the City of London.

As a concert artist, Paul has now appeared on stage over 1000 times in his career with VOCES8, the vocal ensemble he co-founded in 2005. With VOCES8, Paul performs each year around the world. Performance highlights include the Wigmore Hall, the Mariinsky Theatre in Russia, the National Centre of Performing Arts in Beijing, and Opera City in Tokyo. As a recording artist Paul has won numerous awards with VOCES8, and in 2014 the VOCES8 album ‘Eventide’ went to No. 1 in the UK Classical Charts.

Paul leads young leaders programmes in the UK, France and the USA and carries out public speaking and coaching engagements for universities, schools and businesses. His book, ‘The VOCES8 Method’, and an accompanying coaching course for teachers is currently translated into French and German, and is being delivered in hundreds of schools in the UK and internationally.

As a writer and arranger, Paul has composed and arranged music for children’s choirs which has been performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and across the UK. Paul has written 2 children’s musicals for students in Tower Hamlets; ‘Around the World in 60 Minutes’ and ‘Street Cries of London’. He has also worked with the Children’s Society on a singing and creativity based project examining asylum conditions for young people in the UK.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
