Vlog 13 - How to get powerful introductions that lead to interviews for jobs that no one else knows about

Is your network helping you generate leads?

One of the questions on my needs assessment form (http://bit.ly/EPIC_NA - fill it out for a free campaign and résumé critique) is "Does your network know that you are looking for a job and how to develop leads for you?" The most common response is, "no." Right behind that is, "My network knows that I'm looking, but I haven't gotten many leads."

The first biggest mistake job seekers make is not spending MOST of their time networking to land a job (this also applies sales). The second biggest mistake is thinking that networking is about asking people for favors. A job seeker can burn through their friends, family and former colleagues pretty quickly with few to no results by asking people to help them find a position during their job search. What I see most often is that job seekers give up on networking and go back to the job boards, which are the resources that generate the most disappointment and frustration rather than results. These people also find that if their network does return leads to them, they are job postings they have already seen before and perhaps already applied to.

Let me share a networking secret - Most people won't do you favors; most people don't know someone who is hiring an X. However, everyone knows someone with problems, shortcomings, frustrations, disappointments, initiatives, goals, missions, overwhelm, too much on their plate, etc.

By just tweaking your conversations, your network will be asking you, "Can you do me a favor and talk to X? I think they really need you." They will have already told their contact that you just might be their solution. This is how you discover the "hidden job market." It is NOT an enigma. Prove to yourself that it exists by adding the missing ingredient revealed in this vlog.

You'll either be saying, "Sure, I'll call them right away," or "I have a lot of interviews [appointments]. I'll be happy to give them a call next week."
