Mayor Reads October episode fits with the Read In Week theme of “Tell Me Your Story”.
These videos are one of the ways that Edmonton’s Mayor Don Iveson connects to community. As a father of 2 young children and a champion for literacy as well as our public library - he understands the value of sharing books. He has countless invitations to read to school groups but can't possibly accept them all. In an effort to “share our Mayor” and connect to children (and adults) through books we have created a project called Mayor Reads. Monthly episodes are based on books which may be related to seasonal themes or city issues that would appeal to our intended audience of elementary students and families. We are so pleased to have the support of the Edmonton Public Library for this project as they are happily “sharing” with the production and promotion of these videos.
Every Day is Malala Day was chosen because of the powerful message in Malala’s story of making a difference by being a courageous leader. Our city is a place where people build things, try new things and make their mark – people of all ages. And we are lucky to have a public library system that provides everyone with the space, time and opportunity to learn and discover, regardless of their circumstances. It sounds simple, but it can all start with a FREE library card.
