Let me tell you about a young man with an old soul. I saw a young man on Face Book a few months back who really impressed me with his flute playing, singing and overall musical ability. His name is Gareth Laffely. I friended him on Face Book and we began to talk. I learned he was currently in the studio working on a CD. He contacted me about getting a flute for this recording. Having learned this, I wanted to support this up and coming young man, so, I sent him a flute as a gift! The next thing I know, he blows me away sending me an awesome video of him standing on a dock just "jamming" on that flute. It was such an honor! Then I get a package with a demo CD of 6 songs, a certificate of being a supporter (this I will hang in my home) and a T-shirt with Gareth silhouetted by a full moon in which he was playing that very flute I had gifted him. When I popped in the CD, I was blown away! It was then that I learned that this old soul, can sing really well as well as play the flute. Then I read the sleeve and found out that he wrote it all! WOW! When I learned of the RNAFF festival coming up in Tennessee, his home state, I gave him contact information and told he needs to be there, that the world need to see him! He jumped right on it. Several weeks before this upcoming event, Gareth informs me that he was in the studio working on a new song called "Stealing the Moon" and that he wanted to dedicate it to my late Mother Ruth who had just passed on. I was touched very deeply by this! He then contacted me as he wanted to try to purchase a custom flute of his own design and he sent me a picture. It was quite a project, and to have it done before the RNAFF festival would be doable, but a stretch. I would have love to have been in a position financially to gift this to him, but I was not. He agreed to pay the cost, and I went to work. It was a Raven head flute in the key of F#. What he wanted for the block was the Moon with his silhouette like on his shirt and CD cover. The RNAFF festival arrived and this is when I met Gareth for the first time. He was getting ready to go on stage with a very good friend, John Sarantos! Gareth was all business and was not ready to see his new flute until the business at hand was done. Afterwards, we went off and I unveiled his new flute. He was absolutely blown away with it and very, very happy, as was I! Later on that evening, it came time for Gareth to perform, so I got up close to the stage. After a few opening songs, he came out with the flute I had gifted him. He asked me to stand up and he told the audience about the gift and how it came to be. He told them about going into the studio to record "Steal the Moon" and how he dedicated it my my Mother, Ruth Ross! Then he played it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have never been so honored and so deeply touched in my life!!!! I almost came completely unglued emotionally. Although this probably would have been good and healing, I could not allow that in front all these people, Yes, I do have an ego! I'm working on it! Again, let me tell you about a young man! Up until now, I had believed Gareth to be 17, possibly 18 years old. Gareth, I found out is 15 years old! As I see the way that this young man gave back more than he was gifted, That was the Spirit of an old soul! That, was the Spirit of the music! That was the Spirit of giving! That was the Spirit of humanity! And to me, That was the Spirit of the Flute! Gareth, you will always have my support!
