Cambios en los patrones de salinidad semana a semana durante el año 2011. Se destacan algunas características. Como los oceanógrafos han sabido desde hace muchos años, pero ahora lo pueden "ver", el océano Atlántico es más salado que los océanos Pacífico e Índico. Los ríos como el Amazonas llevan a enormes cantidades de escorrentía fresca de los penachos de la tierra y la propagan lejos en el mar. Y en un futuro próximo los trópicos, particularmente en la Zona de convergencia intertropical del Pacífico - la lluvia hace que las aguas ecuatoriales sean un poco más dulces.
