Mortal Kombat: Armageddon was released in 2006. It was the last Mortal Kombat game for the previous generation of consoles (PS2, XBOX), although it also came out for the Wii with motion controlled special moves. The goal was to include as many MK fighters from previous games as they could with the total number of fighters climbing to around 60 or so. Each combatant has two fighting styles that you can cycle through which was a little odd because in the previous game, MK Deception, you had three (two hand to hand and one weapon). You start with a bare hand technique but can switch to a weapon based style on command. It also added an air combat system which was pretty cool if you could remember all the combos. Thats how MK games have been since MK3, you can straight massacre dudes if you can remember tons of combos. So if you love combo based systems you probably dig Mortal Kombat games. If you dislike combo heavy fighters, you probably hate MK games with a passion. I for one LOVE combo fighters like MK and Killer Instinct. The combo system here is pretty good although it can be a little restrictive at times. Individual fatalities are gone (BOOO!) in favor of a create a fatality system which tests your button pressing speed at the end of a match which I dont particularly care for but its not too bad. Boss characters are way over powered and the air combo system can be exploited but get a few friends together on the couch for an MK night and you will have a great time. Overall I dig this games brutal combo system and massive roster. There is also a mode included called Motor Kombat which is like an MK Mario Kart. I know it sounds really cool, and its not bad, but it feels like they could have added so much more to it. It feels as if they had a pretty good idea that they just ran out of time developing.
