Dearbháil Ní Chualáin - Research and Development Manager, Horticulture

Dearbháil has an interesting role within Bord na Móna’s Horticulture business. Her position as research and development manager involves researching peat based growing media and non-peat based growing media for the horticulture industry. Dearbháil credits Bord na Móna with facilitating the development of her career. In her own words ‘Bord na Móna has allowed me to develop in my professional area and has also funded a PhD in my research area’.

Some of Dearbháil’s projects involved investigating the viability of peat free or reduced peat growing media. Many believed that reduced peat or peat free growing media would result in an inferior product. However, through the work of Dearbháil and her team, it was proven that a product consistent with the same performance as peat based growing media could be achieved.
