Parents United for Healthy Schools/Padres Unidos para Escuelas Saludables is a coalition that brings together parents, educators and community leaders from across Chicago. Parents United was established by Healthy Schools Campaign out of concern for the skyrocketing rates of childhood obesity in Chicago, particularly in low-income African American and Latino communities. Since 2006, Parents United has engaged parents in training on the knowledge and skills to develop strategies and organize school wellness teams to support health-promoting changes to food and fitness in schools. The group has been active in advocating for recess at a district level and helping make wellness a priority at the school level.
