Since 1997 more than 50 Lawrence students and faculty have volunteered to teach at summer music camps in community music schools throughout the country of Haiti. Many have returned to Haiti to teach year after year, developing strong ties with musicians there.
Earlier this year Lawrence hosted Haitian music educator Gessoit Pierre Louis on campus. For two terms he was able to take in everything the Conservatory of Music had to offer, including music and theory classes, jazz and saxophone lessons and an independent study with Professor Fred Sturm.
In this video from filmmaker Carolyn Armstrong '10—who has made eight trips to Haiti since 2008—we'll meet Gessoit and follow his incredible journey from Jacmel, Haiti, to Appleton, Wisconsin.
