A PETITION has been launched after a hotel manager in the resort of Protaras allegedly ordered that a small dog be thrown into a garbage crushing machine.
The petition posted on change.org states the dog: "Was deliberately caught and thrown into a commercial cardboard crushing machine on the orders of the manager of a large hotel in Protaras, Cyprus. The agonised, piercing screams of this helpless little soul were heard by horrified tourists."
500 people have signed the petition so far, but the identity of the hotel manager and location of the incident remain unclear.
Stella Stylianou from Argos Animal Welfare told the Famagusta Gazette that those responsible must be named and shamed.
Some reports suggest the hotel manager instructed two employees to dispose of the stray dog, which had been sniffing around the hotel gardens.
The Animal Party have described the incident as 'barbaric' and called for a 'change in mentality'.
"Little Billy is now in a coma in a local vet clinic where the staff are working hard to help him," the petition adds.
If confirmed the incident will be the latest case in a string of animal abuse cases on the island.
In December a 64-year old man was charged after allegedly tying his dog to the rear bumper of his car and dragging it through the streets of Limassol.
The dog died and the man is currently on trail for the killing.
