Radio shock jock Howard Stern has been hired as a judge for the 2012 edition of TV's America's Got Talent, NBC announced Thursday.

Stern, who moved to satellite radio to escape U.S. restrictions on swearing and offensive content that apply to over-the-air radio broadcasts, will replace Piers Morgan on the reality TV talent competition.

Production of the show will move to New York from Las Vegas, so Stern can continue to host his daily program on the SiriusXM network.

"Howard Stern's larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to America's Got Talent starting this summer," NBC alternative programming head Paul Telegdy said in a statement.

"He's a proven innovator and his track record in broadcasting is truly remarkable. Howard is very passionate about this show and is fully committed to its future success."

Speaking on-air Thursday, Stern said he "takes judging very seriously" and would wear a suit to improve his credibility on TV.

America's Got Talent, created by British entertainment mogul Simon Cowell, involves amateur singers and performers who compete for a cash prize and professional contract. One element of the TV show features the judges pressing a loud, red buzzer to indicate performances they don't like.

Stern's popular radio show received a record number of fines from the U.S. broadcast regulator, the Federal Communications Commission, over content deemed offensive before he finally moved to satellite radio in 2006. His decision paved the way for other controversial radio hosts, including duo Opie and Anthony and Laura Schlessinger, to follow.
