The gentle rolling hills, windmills, quiet streets, wineries, Danish bakeries, authentic Danish costumes worn by some shop keepers, Danish smorgaasbord restaurants, museums of racing and Solvang history, in the Danish atmosphere and architecture are only some of the best features of Solvang, a Danish village in the county of Santa Barbara, about 2.5 hours from LA.
Solvang means "sunny field", founded in 1911 by a group of Danish educators, who traveled west to escape midwestern winters. It is home to some bakeries famous for Danish bread and cookies, restaurants, and shops offering a taste of Denmark in California. The architecture as seen in many of its buildings follows traditional Danish style.
Mission Santa Ynes, one of the California missions and a national historic landmark, is located at the center of the town. Established in 1804, it is one of the finest examples of Spanish missions in California, and home to the first learning institution in Alta California.
After our visit to this unique village, we continued our motor trip up north to San Francisco for a tour of the magnificent Hearst Castle, the second in a series of videos of our San Francisco 2010 tour.
