The Navakshari Mantra Nyasa is to done prior to chanting the Navakashari mantra. The Nyasa is a purification process to be completed prior to performing the Navakshari mantra japa and includes Karanyasam involving the hands and Anganyasam or Hridayayasam involving touching different parts of the body. In this recitation, I have chanted the mantra 4 times as a sample at the end. Ideally, the mantras are meditated upon for say 24, 36,64, 108 times (mulitples of 8) and NOT chanted loudly during parayanam or recitation sessions. However, during Chandi Homam/Havan, they may be chanted (with an additional "swaha" at the end of the mantra while offering oblations). It is the Navakshari that engerises the 700 shlokas in the 13 chapters of Devi Mahatmyam into mantras. The 9 syllabled Navakshari is a very powerful mantra. Ideally, you should get initiated into it by a guru. There are many elaborate ways of doing nyasa and the one in this recitation is a very efficient and effective one. Please visit our website to know more about the kriyas or action involved in such nyasa.
