Written by Malvina Reynolds this song has been subject to many spurious interpretations over the years.
Reynolds says she wrote this song because children often go to bed before adults and feel that they are missing out on something. The idea of a train journey to morningtown would give them something to look forward to at bed time. There: Simple as that.
Oddly, this song was played thoughout much of the VietNam conflict at daybreak every day by Armed Forces Radio Viet Nam. Nobody seems to know who started the tradition or why, but it was played at sunrise no matter which DJ was broadcasting.
Look for the Seekers version.
