What is Senmenga ?
Japan's folding fans are said to have been originally produced in Kyoto at the early stage of the Heian Era, which lasted approx. 390 years starting from the year 794 A.D. Senmenga is a certain type of painting, derived from the said origin, painted either on the surface or in the shape of an opened fan. It was some time in the twelfth century when Senmenga began to be produced and painted. This was initiated by tracing motif lines at first, then proceeding to Kotsugaki* in calligraphy ink, creating the background in a golden color, and finally coloring flowers and small animals. Many viewers will marvel to see vivid lives and souls burst from them, which can only be achieved by such mastery, meticulous and skilled touches. * Kotsugaki:A painting technology, in which outlining is made in calligraphy ink before proceeding to the coloring process.
