This is a how to on how to maintain your computer using disk defrag, disk error checking, and anti-virus scanning under windows XP Read Below for explanation of why you should defrag, error check and scan for viruses, along with basic definitions of the terms.
Disk Defragmentation - this is basically to move data thats stored on the disk around to make reading them faster, since during daily use, the hard drive moves the most used data into places on the disk. so its faster to load, but a ton of that makes the loading slower, since the drive has to search for them before reading and loading it.
Disk Error Checking - this is basically to speed the access time as well as well as allowing the saved data to be accessed without errors, since incomplete startups, sudden restarts, and system hangs, can corrupt data that has not been fully read or saved, so this fixes it, by placing data into sections of the disk that hasn't been damaged or corrupted.
Anti-Virus - This is the well known part of every day internet browsing, as it rids of malware that can steal your personal data, or slow your computer down, or even prevent the computer from starting, so basically this is needed to get rid of those pesky uninvited guests that take residence in your system.
