A virgin queen is ready for mating flights 5-7 days after emerging (weather permitting). On these flights she will mate with 10-20 drones. After the drone makes his deposit he dies a happy drone.

In this video I came across a nuc that has a pile of drones outside the entrance. Some were dead some alive. After a closer look at the dead bees I noticed their endtrails were hanging out. Drones don not have stingers so this could only mean these drones followed the queen home. Or maybe the queen didn't go far to mate due to passing rain just an hour before hand. What's your thoughts?
