Of all the nations which battled during World War II, Poland suffered the most. Over 3 million Poles were annihilated by German and Soviet troops - over 15,000 Polish officers were massacred in the forests of Katyn, the Polish intelligentsia was almost obliterated - cities, museums, industries and more virutally brought to the ground. With the end of the war, the Polish people returned in droves to cities that were mere hollows - shadows of death...there was nothing left except sheer will of the Polish people to rebuild and dig out of the rubble.
