Quick demo of our sorting system for MECH 458 at UVic. The system takes four different kinds of items--aluminum, steel, white plastic, and black plastic--and sorts them into the quartered tray at its end. Each item travels along the conveyor belt past a metal sensor and a reflectivity sensor, to determine what the item is. Once the items pass the final sensor, a stepper motor spins the tray to position the appropriate bin. The system goes a little too fast and the tray slowly goes out of alignment due to its momentum, so every time we send a black plastic item it repositions itself using a Hall effect sensor underneath the tray.
In our final demo, we sorted 47 of 48 items correctly in 59 seconds.
The music is James River Blues, by Old Crow Medicine Show.
