The Gum Tree (by me)

Anchor Brewing: Go West IPA (San Francisco, CA)

Out on the edge of town there’s a paling fence built ‘round
a gum tree in bloom with a root bench pew.

And in the crook of a bough is carved a lesson as to how
we can all find purpose for a time, while time hatches plans

Oh but I failed to see,
just when those whys and wherefores came calling on me

And if you climb up in the crown, where all waxwings nestle down
there’s a twisted old limb with a telltale scrawl

It speaks to an elemental truth wherein the young betray their youth and just charge in

And it reads with age there comes a trust that in your wisdom says you must
balance all the ways in which you bleed, in taking your stand

Oh, but I failed to see
The courage of my convictions, or what they might be

And you can sit atop the highest branch and while away the hours
While light is scattered with the leaves
And on each beam, it would seem, is recorded the same phrase:
Just take what comes, and go

And as you clamber down the bole, there’s an ancient wood wasp hole
Tucked inside is a birch paper capstone creed

And it hardly says anything at all, and the words are faded and they’re small
Search just a little bit less, and look around at where you are

Oh, and I failed to see,
Just how those life lessons learned to steer clear of me
