Embracing Self-Consciousness: Authentic Expression in Portrait Photography with
Tamara Lackey

Although there's a big gap between self-consciousness and self-awareness, the two often need to go hand in hand when it comes to eliciting, and then photographing, authentic expression in portraits. Managing social discomfort is a significant part of the portrait photographer's role, and the key to doing so often lies in increased awareness of not only one's subject, but of one's self. In this study of subjects, portraits, and portraits makers, Tamara showcases photographs of some of the most challenging, and rewarding, subjects of all: children - and some of the humans that come with them.

Tamara Lackey is a portrait photographer whose work has been described as "expressive, soulful, funny, beautiful" and has appeared in a multitude of publications, from O Magazine to Men's Journal to Parenting Magazine. Her imagery has also been showcased on ABC's The Martha Stewart Show, ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and NBC's The Today Show.

She is the host and producer of The reDefine Show, "Inside Contemporary Children's Photography" and the Booklist Editors' award-winning "Capturing Life Through (Better) Photography" media collection. She has authored four books - her latest publications are "Envisioning Family" and "The Posing Playbook" - and she was most recently the focus of Nikon's new 5-part web series on photographing portraits. When not shooting, Tamara speaks regularly on art, business, and lifestyle convergence.
