Roger Evans looks at a little fugue by Johann Pachelbel.
Poor Johann Pachelbel. Over-familiarity with one of his pieces has, through no fault of his, bred disdain in many of our contemporaries. (Somewhere Rachmaninoff may be telling him, "At least you didn't have to play that C-sharp Minor Prelude in every concert for years! Yours became popular only after you were safely out of the way.") Pachelbel deserves better; and while this little fugue is pretty unpretending, we will look at some more profound music of his later on.
