Oh, Crysis 2, why'd you have to be so great and ruin our almost-perfect run of "Shooter Series 3" nominees? We kid, of course, though that does bring up the conspicuous absence of one of the most popular games of the year: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. In a year with so many top-notch shooters, of which MW3 is one, Activision's trigger-happy titan was left on the cutting-room floor. The weight of all the campaigns, competitive multiplayer modes, and cooperative offerings were measured and balanced, and in the end, we had more editors speak passionately about the nominees on this list than the ones that were left off. The brash attitude of Bulletstorm and the harrowing realism of Red Orchestra 2 were also fondly remembered, but in the end, there could only be five.
