Intensive Mandarin Chinese Review of zh-ch-sh-r Pinyin Sounds: Video #16 Transcript

Good afternoon, xiawu hao, my good students.I got many comments from my youtube friends about pronounciation difficulties of a few pinyin sounds so we will review the tougher ones in this lesson.

Listen to me first, then you will find out whether you have the same problems.
(The teacher reads zh,ch,sh,r,z,c,s,j,q,x together)

Wow, is it comfusing for you? They sound very similar, is it? Can you find out the difference between them?

I've already told you how important pinyin is for learning Mandarin Chinese. So from now on I will cover the very difficult pinyin sound in four classes. Today let's pay attention to zh,ch,sh,r.

For zh,ch,sh,r sound, I will give you the general idea zh-less as in judge,ch-less as in choose,sh-less as in shoe,r-less as in run.Giving you general idea just for helping you with remembering them easily, but please watch out, most importantly you need to master the accurate sound. So now ,follow me carefully.

Firstly look at my mouth, tongue, for looking clearly, here my hand is my tongue now, put you hand flat first, and now, curl back, now I am sure you are clear,your tongue needs to be curled back. Then follow me loudly.Zh

yìzhī niǎo一只鸟(a bird),yìzhí一直(still),zhǐ纸(paper),zhìshǎo至少(at least )

Next one,ch, keep the shape, don't change anything, pay attention to the difference.

chīfàn吃饭(have dinner),chídào迟到(late),chǐcùn尺寸(size),chìbǎng翅膀(wing)

Next one, always keep the shape, sh.
cháoshī潮湿(wet),shí十(ten),lìshǐ历史(history).shì是(be verbs)

Review them together, zh,ch,sh
Ok, the last one, keep the same shape, r
Review them together, zh,ch,sh,r.
