Johann Sebastian Bach composed the Well-Tempered Clavier (German: Das Wohltemperierte Klavier) book around 1722 "for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning, and especially for the pastime of those already skilled in this study". BWV 846 is a part of this collection, which includes BWV 846 - 893 (Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis or "Bach Works Catalogue").
