Many of us remember the building located on the corner of Glen Avenue and Main Avenue as the "Car Books" building. This 1926 structure sits in the middle of a residential neighborhood and from the time it was built until 2001, the premises had been used in part as an office and in part as a storage-warehouse facility for small items.
In 1998, Martin Yate, a Sea Cliff resident, drove by the gray stucco building which was covered by graffiti. He had just returned from a business trip to Mexico, and he suddenly realized that the large building could have a fabulous interior hidden by a bland exterior, a concept more common in Latin America and Mexico than it is in this country. Mr. Yate bought the building, which had 5100 square feet of space and with ceilings from 14 to 16 feet high. He drew his vision for the house to be built inside the building, and he hired a master carpenter to build it. Eight months later Mr. Yate moved in. He avoided using standard materials for this unique home. Almost all the windows and doors came from a building that had once been the Sea Cliff jail. Inside the house he made a "backyard" open to the sky but, when he chose, closed to the street. He said he never missed a conventional lawn. He erected a spiral staircase from his backyard courtyard which led to the roof, where he planted a garden.
In 2002, the house was sold to its present owner. This home, with its flowing floor plan and energizing living environments retains Mr. Yate's vision. The home features a living room, dining room, eat-in kitchen, master bedroom, master bath, 2 additional bedrooms (one with a loft), an additional full bath, office/studio, a laundry room, 2 open outdoor courtyards (one with a hot tub), a roof-top garden and two 2-car garages. The property is currently on the market with Sherlock Homes and is offered at $899,000.
