(Hanshin Koshien Stadium - all footage and description from the soundcheck on the last leg of Prince's "Nude Tour" full courtesy of Steve Purcell)
Before Steve Purcell's own description of this clip, I'd like to personally acknowledge such a rare, soulful look into the creative process of Prince and his approach to music. As a musician myself, the way Prince brought this about really kind of blew me away.
The song itself is a well known jazz standard, yet Prince goes about it completely improv in freshing the band on it and that approach, in turn, lets the band learn it more from their own perspective as opposed to "how it should sound". This way, Prince and the band really made the tune *their own*. It's things like this - stuff that's rarely, if ever, seen - that really gives you a deeper appreciation for true artists and musicians like Prince.
Now, in Steve Purcell's own words:
"This is August 2, 1990 (incorrect date) sound check Osaka Japan. I spent six years of my life working for, creating with and laying the foundation for the rest of my career with Prince. Long nights, remote parts of the world and creative growth beyond my wildest dreams. This may not be the Prince you think of but it is the Prince I knew. Those years were and will always remain the highlight of my career. Thanks for the good times RIP Kid."
