When artist Steve Powers wrote for my book, "Stickers: from Punk Rock to Contemporary Art", I was intrigued by his description of the conflict between the city's many locksmiths. He wrote about how they were constantly battling for that small piece of advertising real-estate on the sides of doors on commercial buildings. I immediately started noticing the small stickers on almost every rollup metal gate or door frame, and how one company's sticker would be slapped on top of another, or how the phone numbers were being scribbled over, or scratched off. I was also struck by the beauty of the decaying ephemera mixed with the rusting metal underneath. I decided to document and photograph this seldom noticed old skool marketing battle. Over a six month period, armed with my trusty iPhone I shot over a thousand stickers, here are a few of them.
