The Sanin Main Line (山陰本線 San'in-honsen ? ) is a railway line in western Japan that runs from Kyoto to Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR West). It is the major railway line of the San'in region, running along the Japan Sea, crossing Kyoto, Hyōgo, Tottori, Shimane and Yamaguchi prefectures. The main portion from Kyoto to Hatabu is the longest single continuous railway line in Japan at 673.8 km, although no regularly scheduled train runs through the entire line. The section between Kyoto and Sonobe, connecting Kyoto and its northern suburbs, is a part of JR West's Urban Network and is nicknamed the Sagano Line

Yonago (米子市, Yonago-shi?) is a city located in the northwest of Tottori, Japan, facing the Sea of Japan, and adjacent to Shimane. It is the prefecture's second largest city after Tottori and therefore a commercial center of the western part of this prefecture. Yonago has always been an important crossing point of several routes in the area. Currently, it is the crosspoint of three railway lines and has a seaport to the Oki Islands. 米子市（よなごし）は、鳥取県の西部の市で島根県と接する。山陰地方の中 央部に位置する都市。 古くから商業都市として発展し、『山陰の大阪』とも呼ばれる。 JR境線･伯備線の分岐点として、国鉄時代には米子鉄道管理局が置かれ、国道 9･180･181号が通り、米子空港をもつ山陰の交通の要地となっている。 鳥取大学医学部や山陰放送（テレビ・ラジオ併設局）などがあり、山陰の拠 点都市の1つとなっている。なお、山陰両県を統括する機関は米子市か松江市 に置くケースが多い。 本市を中心に山陰最大の人口を擁する米子都市圏が形成されている。また、 隣接する松江都市圏・出雲都市圏とともに、雲伯地方に中海・宍道湖経済圏 が形成されていると見なされる。

弓ヶ浜半島（ゆみがはまはんとう）は、 鳥取県西部の米子市と境港市に連なる半島。弓 浜（きゅうひん）半島、夜見ヶ浜半島、五里ヶ浜ともいわれる。日本の白砂青松100選 に も選定されている。
全長約17km、幅約4km。日本海（美保湾）と中海を分ける。外洋側には長い砂州があ り、それに防風林である松原が沿うようにして広がっている。 元々は島だったところに、 日野川や佐陀川から流れ出た土砂が風や波または 対馬海流か らの分岐沿岸流が作用して堆積し、半島が形成されたと考えられている。そのため地盤 が緩い。 また、全体的に標高が低くなだらかで、山がほとんど存在しない。

美保湾（みほわん）は本州・南西部にある湾。東北東に開け、日本海に面している。湾口は幅約14km、奥行き約9.4kmの幅広な湾であり、湾の南東岸には日野川が流入し、北西では境水道を通じて、中海と繋がっている。海岸は北岸の美保関周辺を除き、砂浜が多く、西岸の弓ヶ浜半島では長い砂浜である弓ヶ浜海岸が見られる。鳥取県から島根県にかかっており、南西岸には米子市の市街地、北西岸には境港市の市街地がある。また、湾内には淀江漁港、境漁港、長浜港、美保関港などがある。境港や米子港は水道内や中海側に位置し、外洋側の美保湾には面していない。1927年には湾口付近において、日本海軍の艦艇衝突事故である美保関事件が起きている。
