The first twelve months of life are characterised by substantial changes in many aspects of psychological function – social, perceptual and cognitive. During the same period the infant’s motor abilities change substantially as well; they learn to crawl, sit up, grasp objects, and use simple tools like spoons or cups. What is the relationship between motor development and these other aspects of development? Although much existing evidence shows that performing actions help infants to process those actions when they are performed by others, actions with tools present different challenges for infants’ cognitive and motor development.
