HINOYOUJIN (火の用心) "BEWARE OF FIRES", is the familiar warning heard at night in small traditional neighbourhoods in Japan; neighbourhoods built mostly of wood. The rounds are called YOMAWARI (夜まわり) literally: "NIGHT ROUNDS". The wood instruments used to make the warning sound are called hyōshigi (拍子木) and are simple Japanese musical instrument, consisting mostly of two pieces of hardwood linked by a thin ornamental rope. Hyoshigi are traditionally used in traditional theaters in Japan to announce the beginning of a performance.
