Scientists are investigating alternative methods to treat patients with kidney failure. A promising approach might be the development of a living artificial kidney. Kidney cells are cultured on a synthetic membrane composed of bioactive nanomaterials. This concept is currently explored by the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (Eindhoven University of Technology) and is illustrated in this animation.
